Renato Poblete S.J. Honored By U.S. Catholic Foundations

Distinguished Catholic Leadership Award Conferred on Chilean Advocate for the Poor

Santiago, Chile----- Renato Poblete Barth S.J. was awarded the Distinguished Catholic Leadership Award, March 12, 1998, during a dinner here in his honor sponsored by FADICA. Father Poblete was chosen to receive the honor because of his life-long service to the poor and needy in Chile.

For many years Father Poblete has been a leading force in developing Hogar de Cristo, Chile's largest charity, providing housing, food, and social services to thousands of low-income families. He is also President of CISOC - Bellarmino, a research and planning agency for the Catholic church in Chile.

The Distinguished Catholic Leadership Award is FADICA's highest honor and was established by FADICA to recognize exceptional creativity and skill in advancing the church's mission. Over the past decade previous DCLA recipients include: Walter J. Burghardt S.J., former editor of Theological Studies, whose extraordinary work to improve parish preaching was cited by FADICA in 1991. Other awardees include: William J. Byron S.J., former president of The Catholic University of America; Education for Parish Service foundress, Joan Bland SND; and vocations and seminary expert, Katarina Schuth OSF. Present for the presentation of the Distinguished Catholic Leadership Award were 25 members of FADICA and various guests taking part in FADICA's March 8-13 conference on the Church in Latin America in the Next Millenium.

These included: Archbishop Oscar A. Rodriguez, President of the Latin American Bishops' Conference and Bishop of Tegucigalpa Honduras; Bishop Roberto Gonzalez, Chairman of the U.S. Bishop's Committee for Latin America; Bishop Javier Prado, General Secretary of the Chilean Bishops' Conference; and various lay leaders from Chile and Argentina.
