| December 1, 1999 Bishop John J. Leibrecht to Address Foundations on Topic of Catholic Boards and Religious Mission Washington, DC. The chairman of the committee which last month obtained the U.S. bishops' approval for new church norms that will govern American Catholic colleges and universities, will address FADICA's foundations when they meet January 28-29 for their midwinter meeting in Florida. Bishop Leibrecht of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau, Missouri diocese will speak on the subject: The Spirituality of Trusteeship. The bishop will discuss the religious responsibilities of Catholic laity who serve in positions of board governance within Catholic institutions. The steep decline in the number of men and women in religious orders combined with ever increasing involvement of laity as trustees and board members of Catholic charitable and educational institutions has presented a host of new challenges. Included among these is the task of imparting a lucid understanding among lay trustees of distinctive religious mission of their agencies and how those entities are accountable to the wider church. Bishop Leibrecht will be joined by a number of other speakers including William J. Byron SJ, Superior of the Jesuit Community at Georgetown University; Nathan O. Hatch, Provost of the University of Notre Dame; Joseph A. Appleyard SJ, Vice President for Mission at Boston College; John S. Lore, President of Ascension Health Corporation; Fred Kammer SJ, Executive Director of Catholic Charities USA, Father David Nygren CM, a consultant to Catholic Health Care West; Marsha V. Whelan, Director of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools; Joseph F. O'Connell SJ, President of Jesuit Secondary School Association and Judith A. Dwyer, Vice President, the University of St. Thomas. The invitational symposium is one in a continuing series of symposia sponsored by FADICA to enable private foundation trustees to stay abreast of important trends and programs under Catholic auspices. FADICA was founded in 1976 and is comprised of forty-four foundations assisting Catholic causes. Return to List of News Releases | Back to Top |
