| January 11, 1999 New York Couple To Receive Philanthropic Honor Washington, D.C. ----- George and Marie Doty will be honored by FADICA at a special dinner January 22, 1999 in Naples, Florida. The Dotys will receive the Charles Carroll Award in Catholic Philanthropy, FADICA's highest honor. Attending the special dinner will be over seventy representatives of private foundations assisting the Catholic church. Msgr. Robert L. Stern, of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and Msgr. Charles J. Fahey, Director of the Third Age Center at Fordham University, will be among several dignitaries present. The Dotys of Rye, New York, were chosen for the honor for their life-long devotion to the work of the church. The couple has contributed their time and financial resources for more than half a century to numerous Catholic organizations. Through their leadership in FADICA, private foundations launched efforts to improve accounting and management systems in the Holy See, undertake cooperative ventures to improve parish preaching, advance religious education, and increase a church-wide sense of stewardship. In recent years, the Dotys have been assisting in the restoration of churches in the Holy Land. In 1997 the Dotys paid for the restoration of the dome in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Past recipients of the Charles Carroll Award have included the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, the Loyola Foundation, and several individuals within the Catholic foundation community including Mr. Peter S. Robinson of New York, Erica P. John of Milwaukee, and John M. Bruderman of Lantana, Florida. The award is named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, the first cousin of John Carroll, the first American bishop. The late historian, John Tracy Ellis said of Carroll, "In the history of American Catholicism, there is no more honored name . . ." FADICA is an association of over forty private foundations. Its mission is primarily educational providing forums for the discussions of research and trends in Catholicism. Return to List of News Releases | Back to Top |
