September 28, 1999 FADICA Member Foundation Plays Influential Role in Convening Humanitarian Aid and Human Rights Representatives New York, The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation conferred its forth annual million dollar Humanitarian Prize September 28th during a conference it sponsored in New York City. The foundation, a member of the FADICA consortium since 1982, presented the award to the African Medical and Research Foundation, formally known as the Flying Doctors, for its work in providing medical care throughout East Africa. Present for the awards ceremony were over two hundred leaders of private and public humanitarian and human rights organizations. Francis J. Butler, FADICA's president, and FADICA board member, Peter S. Robinson, were present, as well as a number of Catholic organizations, including Catholic Relief Services and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, among others. The Hilton Foundation also conducted day long discussions with human rights experts including Olara Otunnu, Special U.N. Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Mary Robinson, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Robert A. Seiple, Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, U.S. State Department, among others. "The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation deserves an enormous commendation for its attention to growing dangers and obstacles humanitarian aid organizations face in some 30 war torn nations of the world," said Dr. Butler. "This is an outstanding example of how a foundation inspired by the religious ideals and values of its founder, can inspire others to action and advance human dignity," he added.
