Previous News Releases October 3, 2000 Georgetown Church Research Group Gives Cardinal Cushing Medal to Foundation Organization Washington, DC ----- The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), an organization that conducts social survey research for the Catholic hierarchy and church institutions, will confer the Cardinal Cushing Medal on FADICA. The award, to be presented by CARA Board Chairman, Bishop William Friend on October 11, 2000 at a special dinner at Georgetown University, is being conferred on the association for its efforts to advance the use of social research within philanthropy. FADICA, founded twenty-five years ago, is a consortium of over forty-five private foundations that support Catholic institutions and programs. Throughout its history FADICA has made regular use of research to help guide the funding programs of its members. In the early 1980s, for example, FADICA help launch the first research documenting the financial crisis facing retired religious men and women. Most recently, FADICA completed a lengthy study on laity in the Catholic church by employing extensive research documenting massive educational and formation needs as lay people assume greater leadership roles within Catholic institutions. Through more than fifty symposia, FADICA has explored research studies funded through the foundation community on topics ranging from the future of Catholic schools to financial accountability within parishes. According to FADICAs president, Francis J. Butler, "the research data and scholarship utilized by FADICA over the years has helped its member foundations acquire a more strategic approach to grant making." "We are honored by this distinction from the Center for Applied Research," said Dr. Butler, "and by the association it brings with the venerable name of one of its founders, Cardinal Cushing," he added. CARA was founded thirty-five years ago to conduct scientific studies for the Catholic church. Richard Cardinal Cushing, the late Archbishop of Boston, contributed start-up funds for CARA, and served as Honorary Chairman of the CARA Board for six years. Previous News Releases | Back to Top |
