How to Run A Catholic Foundation: Increasing the Impact of Religious Giving

Increasing the impact of the charitable dollar is more than a matter of management science. For Catholic foundations achieving a desired outcome has as much to do with understanding the religious environment as it does grant making technique and evaluation methods. American Catholic culture defined in the past by clergy and religious and parochial life and customs has changed profoundly. Religious practice, institutional identity, knowledge of the faith , church leadership and priorities are the subject of lively debates. Explosive growth in theology and ministry, the plight of Catholic schools, and new waves of interest in Catholic spirituality comprise a bewildering setting for those doing Catholic grant making. These conference proceedings discuss the context of religious grant making today and offer the experience of foundation trustees who have successfully navigated the changing landscape of Catholicism.

Funding Churches in the Future

Over half of the yearly 200 billion dollars in charitable contributions in the U.S. go to the religious sector. Catholics, representing one quarter of the U.S. population, have stepped forward as never as donors and volunteers in church related ministries and services. And yet, compared to their religious counterparts in America, Catholic giving behavior remains a puzzle. Giving to Catholic church activities remains about half of what it was in 1960’s. The drop comes at a time when Catholics have achieved levels of wealth and income far exceeding all projections in decades past. This conference of pollsters and pastors examines what is at work in the mind of average Catholic donors and what can be done to improve their financial participation in the church.
